Isaiah 50: 4-9a; Philippians
2: 5-11
Luke 19:
28-40
Dad: What does it mean to be obedient, son?
Son: Well, Dad, I think it means to listen and to
give respect.
Dad: I like your definition. Do you think people
today, in the 21st century show obedience?
Son: Depends on the person. If I had to say in general, though, yes. For example, I know that students have to be
obedient to their teachers.
Dad: I especially like that example! Do you think
humility has anything to do with obedience?
Son: Yes.
Dad: What is humility to you?
Son: It has to do with being embarrassed.
Dad: So, you think people should be embarrassed?
Son: Sometimes. It shows who's in charge.
Dad: I guess I hadn't thought of it like
that. When I read from Isaiah, God's
call to the Lord: "I have called
you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given
you as covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that
are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those
who sit in the darkness,"
I didn't see the
idea of embarrassment. But, if I'm
brought out of the darkness and into the light, out of prison and into freedom,
maybe I would feel some embarrassment.
This reminds me of the old definition of "awesome": which
means to fear the greatness of God.
Son: I think that your definition makes more
sense. I didn't think of it like
that. I guess humility is an important
part of obedience.
