Mark 4: 1-20
A Seed of
Heavenly Sarcasm
God’s
word is eternal and he was gracious enough to enable some the courage and
insight to write down a portion of his wisdom, grace and love for us all.
For
the people of Jesus’ time the wisdom of the Seed Parable was meant to be
obscure – to be revealed over time to those with ears to hear and eyes to see.
Two
thousand years later, this parable might be considered as obvious as “white on
rice”, as the old saying goes. God, in
his timelessness, knew WE would be reading this parable in today’s time with
our ability to see and hear what it has to reveal.
So
Jesus is, in effect, speaking directly to US, expecting US to have the same
insight he revealed to his disciples those two millennia ago. And when he does so, perhaps we can feel a
tone of divine sarcasm – yes, sarcasm - in his voice when he states “lest
perhaps they repent and be forgiven”. As
if to say any “child” can see what I am saying.
So
shall WE look the other way and play “dumb” when Jesus tells us so obviously –
turn away from Satan, don’t be a part-time Christian, and don’t let that next
pay raise go to making the lawn greener and the fence higher, but rather simply
be just one of God’s voices that can bring everlasting life to 30, 60 or 100 other
people (Oh, and lest we forget: Repent and be Forgiven!)
AMEN.
