The Committee meets regularly and gives updates to the congregation by way of announcements or articles.

Thank you to everyone who cared about these young people and gave from their hearts.
| DONATING SECURITIES | ||||||||||||||
| Have you ever considered donating securities as part of your pledge or building fund donation? There may be tax advantages to doing so. If you are interested in donating your securities to the Gilead Church, you may want to consult with your Accountant or Tax Advisor. The steps required for a securities transfer are:
- Send a list of the securities being transferred including the quantity and CUSIP number and instruct United Church Foundation(UCF) to credit the transfer to Gilead Congregational Church Account #080760 UCF Cash & Equivalent Fund. -Notify the Church Treasurer of the intent of the donation so that it can be credited to you and applied to the proper church account. UCF can be reached at 475 Riverside Drive, Suite 1020, New York, New York 10115. If you have any questions or need assistance, please speak with Art Austin, Asset Coordinator.
| OUTDOOR CHAPEL | ||||||||||||||

Funds will be held in a separate account until construction begins in the spring. Thank you!
| FAITH AND FILM SERIES | ||||||||||||||
| Join us this Friday, November 7th at 6:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall for a potluck followed by a film and discussion. We will be watching Lions for Lambs (R-Rated). Robert Redford directs and stars in this complex look at America's war on terror, a three-pronged narrative of lives connected by politics and bloodshed. While a Washington bigwig (Tom Cruise) goes toe to toe with a reporter (Meryl Streep) on the issue of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, an idealistic professor (Robert Redford) tries to keep his students engaged as two of his former pupils struggle to survive behind enemy lines in the Middle East.
Also, mark your calendars for Friday, December 5th when we will be watching and discussing Music Within (R -Rated). After losing his hearing during the Vietnam War, Richard Pimental (Ron Livington) returns to America, where he falls in with an unlikely circle of friends and finds a new calling as a spokesman for the disabled. His efforts as an activist eventually lead to the creation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. This inspiring and entertaining true story won the Audience Award at the 2007 AFI Dallas International Film Festival. Please bring a dish to share and join us!
| ADVENT WORKSHOP | ||||||||||||||
| Everyone is invited to join us in the Fellowship Hall after the 10:00 a.m.
worship service on Sunday, December 7th for an Advent Workshop from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Following coffee hour, we'll enjoy a light lunch of hearty breads and delicious soups along with some sandwiches for children. We will then share in the spirit and meaning of the season by making seasonal crafts, decorating cookies, hearing a story and maybe even singing a few Christmas carols. Please plan on joining us! If you have any questions or are willing to help, please speak with Annette Langevin (Chair of our Board of Christian Education).
| ||||||||||||||
| BUILDING INSTRUCTIONAL SESSION | ||||||||||||||
| Join us on Sunday, November 9th following worship at 11:15 a.m. for a brief building instructional session. Barry MacLachlan and Jim Kenniston will provide a tour of the new addition including the Fellowship Hall while Glen Hadley will explain the procedures for using our kitchen equipment, including the new stove and oven. | ||||||||||||||
| COMMUNITY DINNERS | ||||||||||||||
| The theme for our building project was "Building to Serve." Now that our building is complete, we are exploring ways we can serve not only our congregation, but the wider community. One idea is for us to host community dinners. It is our feeling and concern that there are people living in Hebron who could use not only a nice meal, but also a sense of community. We'd like to try to provide it by offering dinners which are free and open to the public. The idea is still germinating, so if you would like to join in helping to make this possibility a reality, please speak with Harvey Desruisseaux (643-9679) or Pastor Denise (228-3077). There are many ways to get involved--planning, cooking, setting up, cleaning up, etc. Please consider joining us!

| I LOVE TO TELL THE STORY | ||||||||||||||
"Always
be prepared to give an account of the hope that is within you." 1 Peter
3:16 What a difference a year makes! Just one year ago we were in the middle of construction for our Church's renovation and additions, and now we are putting it to good use. This building truly stands as a testimony to what we as individual members can do when we come together as the body of Christ. It is only because of the generosity of many individuals that this building is a reality. In these challenging times, we will need this same spirit of generosity to meet the challenge of our annual budget for 2009. At our Annual Meeting, we passed a budget that represents a 17.5 % increase over pledge commitments made in 2008. This is a significant increase largely due to the increased expenses (e.g. insurance, maintenance, utilities, mortgage, etc.) associated with our addition. The theme for this year's Stewardship Campaign is "I Love to Tell the Story" During the month of October, we invited people to reflect on their story of faith and why it is and what it is that they love about the Gilead Church. One person wrote, "One of the many reasons I love the Gilead Church is that all three of our children attended the Confirmation Class, and were part of the Youth Group. Serving at soup kitchens, going on mission trips, and attending services of other faiths, opened their eyes and hearts to people with different stories. As they have become young adults, it is a blessing to see how they've incorporated the many lessons they have learned at the Gilead Church into how they live their lives." This commitment to touch and transform lives through the many and varied ministries of the Gilead Church depends on the contribution of our members and friends. Only a small percentage of our funds (less than 5%) come from fundraisers and donations for the use of our building. For those who like hard numbers, we have approximately 115 pledges who give an average annual pledge of $1,269. With a 2009 pledge budget of $171,490, which is $25,606 above our 2008 pledge commitments of $145,884, simple math suggests that an increase of approximately $222 per pledge (or about $4.25 per week) is necessary. Of course, while not everyone can handle such an increase (some can do that much and even more), it does provide a starting point to address the financial challenge we face. Each individual or family must determine what is right for them to give. We realize that these are challenging times for us all, as we feel the pressure and anxiety of economic uncertainty. Now, more than ever, we need to support the programs of our church which support children, youth and families with programs that help them to not only survive, but thrive. While our pledge challenge this year is significant, we are confident that as a church family we can meet it. Over the next few Sundays, we will be hearing from people about their story of faith and what story it is that they love to tell about the Gilead Church. We hope you will join us and that it will help you consider the importance of the Gilead Church in your life and in the lives of so many others. A letter inviting members and friends to be a part of this campaign will be going out early the week of November 9th. The letter will include a 2009 pledge card. These cards will be dedicated during worship on November 23rd. If you are unable to be with us on that day, please return the card to the church to the attention of our Assistant Treasurer before the 23rd and we will include it in our dedication. If you have any questions, please speak with a member of our Stewardship Committee: Jeff Haines, Jack Hooker (Chairperson), Paul Miller, Doug Stewart. Thank you!
| "FOUND CHANGE FOR CHANGE" by Jan Smith | ||||||||||||||
|
A collection of change, which started on 2/1/05 and ended on
10/26/08, has raised a total of $2,110.99 for our church's Building
Fund! The idea for the collection was based on the fact that God
appears in mysterious ways and unusual places. Change contributed to
the collection was found on the ground, in jars in pantries, flying
through the air, on business travel, in barns, at work, at school, in
stores, in shoeboxes, in different states, and many other locations.
Not only have we raised a significant amount of money for our
church's Building Fund, but we've also shared a lot of amazing
stories. Thanks to all who contributed their "found change" and
stories! As is printed on the coins..."In God We Trust".

| 8TH ANNUAL HOMELESS AWARENESS EVENT | ||||||||||||||

The purpose of this evening is to engage our youth in an evening of learning about and experiencing homelessness. The evening will begin at 5 p.m. with youth setting up the boxes they will sleep in for the night. At 6 p.m. we will gather in our Fellowship Hall to share a simple meal prepared by the Women's Fellowship, and hear from our evening speaker from the Domestic Violence Shelter in Willimantic. Following this, the youth will be working on baking pies for Hebron Interfaith Human Services' Thanksgiving baskets as well as completing their annual fundraising mailing. The youth will then spend the night sleeping outside on the church lawn in cardboard boxes. Members and friends of the church are invited to visit throughout the evening and to drop off turkeys which will go to Foodshare and also coats, which this year will go to Manchester Area Conference of Churches (MACC). If you have any questions about the Homeless Awareness Event, please speak with Melanie Miller (707-4893).
| TIPS ON GREEN LIVING
-- by Sandy Hooker |
||||||||||||||
Our furnaces, wood stoves and electric heaters are running. Use that heat to dry your clothes! Many of us have wood or metal drying racks at home and these are great for drying laundry without using the energy of your clothes dryer. Hanging your laundry on a drying rack will also help to humidify your air which is often dry in the winter months. It does take a little extra time and isn't quite as convenient as just transferring the clothes from the washer to the dryer -- but -- it will save you money, save energy and help our environment. Try it! Sort out at least one load a week perhaps of clothes that need to be ironed anyway -- like blouses and men's dress shirts. Try socks and undergarments. You'll be surprised how quickly a rack of laundry will dry in your home in the winter. Remember also that fabric softeners and dryer sheets reduce absorbency in fabric so even though they make your bath towels feel nice and fluffy -- a scratchy towel is really more absorbent and stimulates your skin like a loofah!
| SWIFT WATERS ARTISANS CO-OP | ||||||||||||||
| Swift Waters Artisans Co-Op is located at 750 Main Street in Willimantic. Locally made items include: wood carving, wood turning, jewelry, painting, weaving, soap and candles. Please identify yourself as a Gilead Church member or friend at the time of purchase. Thank you, Sue! | ||||||||||||||
| HEBRON INTERFAITH HUMAN SERVICES (H.I.H.S.) THANKSGIVING BASKETS | ||||||||||||||

| MISSION FAIR | ||||||||||||||
| What is a mission fair? A mission fair is an opportunity for a congregation to come together to celebrate God's mission to the people of our community, state, and the world. It is an opportunity for people to learn, ask questions, and find ways to get involved in bringing the hope of Jesus Christ to all people.
The Board of Missions will be hosting a Mission Fair on Sunday, November 16th. During worship, Tim Rose will be with us to talk about the importance of Christian mission as well as share his experiences as a missionary with the Global Ministries Board of our United Church of Christ in France. Following worship, organizations that we support will have displays set up in our Fellowship Hall. This will be an opportunity to learn more about our church's ministry outreach programs. Our hope is to encourage you to help support missionaries and mission projects through your prayers, gifts, and service. Please plan to join us!

| "BUILDING TO SERVE" PLEDGE/FUNDING UPDATE | ||||||||||||||
"Then…families…responded willingly and gave for the work of the house of God…(and) the people rejoiced at this willing response."
1 Chronicles 29:6,7,9
Hallelujah! We have a beautiful newly completed space to celebrate God, friendship, love, and community. The new addition has already been utilized in so many different ways including Denise's 10th anniversary celebration as our pastor. Our new terrace and stone sitting wall provides a natural setting to enjoy God's beauty.
The following is an update on pledges made and received, as well as where we stand with the endowment and mortgage. The final cost of construction was approximately $1.4 million.
With construction complete, it is easy to forget that we still have to complete payment on this amazing new addition. Our lender is allowing us to pay interest only on the funds borrowed up to September 2009, at which time we will begin to pay a monthly mortgage. Currently we are paying $2,500/month for interest alone! The sooner we bring the principle borrowed amount down to the original goal of $200,000, the sooner our mortgage will be more manageable. We also stand to save thousands of dollars in interest payments if we get the amount borrowed as low as possible. Please consider completing your pledge early to help us in this effort. God has provided and blessed us tremendously during this exciting period of growth. If you have not made a pledge and would like to be a part of this exciting project, please contact Jan Mango (Assistant Treasurer for the Building Campaign) at 228-4877. If you have questions, please feel free to contact any member on the Follow-up Committee. Thanks to all for your commitment and generosity! Annette Langevin, Jan Mango, Rev. Esslinger, Doug Stewart, Pam D'Amico
| FALL MISSION PROJECT | ||||||||||||||

The best time to reach Rev. Esslinger in the office is on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Sally Fritsche, Administrative Assistant will be working at the Parish House on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 8:00 a.m. until noon. She can be reached by calling 228-3077 or via e-mail at: gileadchurchucc@earthlink.net |

PRIVACY LEGISLATION ON HOSPITAL STAYS |
||||||||||||||
A new federal law greatly restricts the disclosure of patient information by hospitals. As a result, the pastor and church office may not know that a member has been admitted to the hospital. If you are hospitalized, and would like to notify the pastor, it is important that you (or a family member) inform the church office as soon as possible. Call us at 228-3077 or email the church office and let us know. Remember, hospitals no longer can provide this information to us. |
