Annual Chicken BBQ

Our Church holds an annual Chicken BBQ every 3rd Saturday in July. This event is a big fundraiser for the Church's General Fund. The committee has been headed by Rob Gaspar and Alison Doherty for the last few years. As Rob puts it, he takes care of the outside and Alison takes care of the inside. Together they make up a great team. They know they can depend on each other for support and also know that nothing will be left behind. The formula is similar but it gets fine tuned each year. Some area Churches have had to eliminate this event from their calendar due to lack of support, but fortunately Rob and Alison manage to drum up volunteers each year.

The planning begins early in May with committee members meeting to plan out the event. Tasks are assigned and ideas are explored. By July the hope is that all the big stuff is done and it's down to the fine-tuning. The morning of the event, the tent is raised, chairs are set up, and food is delivered. Usually the chickens are cooked at the Church, but this year they were cooked off site in case it rained. It worked out really well because there was a little less "craziness" going on at the Church. The food prep also begins early that morning. The cranberry sauce is put into single serving containers and the Charlotte's"secret" potato salad recipe is prepared from the ingredients that volunteers have brought to the Church.

There is a great amount of fellowship during the setting up that continues throughout the day. Volunteers help to serve the meal, run drinks to the table, and clean up after the event. It's always a great day for all who participate!
