Open & Affirming Committee Update

The Open & Affirming Committee continues to engage the congregation in a time of discernment as to whether or not we will become an Open & Affirming Church. Since the O&A Committee will not be meeting during June or July, we wanted to take this opportunity to provide a general update of the process. We have provided many opportunities throughout the past year for the congregation to become involved in this time of discernment through: an introduction to O&A session, panel discussions, a Bible study series, individual speakers, presentation of opposing viewpoints, a movie viewing, a suggestion/question box, and an open invitation for one on one discussions with committee members. We have received input from and participation by a diverse cross section of the congregation, and have finally reached the point where we have prepared the following draft "Open & Affirming Statement":

"In the spirit of Jesus' great commandment to love God, and our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:28-34), and Paul's teaching of acceptance of one another (Romans 14:1-15:13), we, the members of Gilead Congregational Church seek to let our light shine (Matthew 5:14-16). As a church set on Gilead Hill, we welcome and affirm all persons of every race, age, gender, family structure, physical or mental ability, economic status, faith background, nationality and sexual orientation or identity into the full life and ministry of this community of faith, including membership and leadership. We welcome and embrace the gifts that each child of God brings to the life of our congregation. As an Open and Affirming church, we join our sisters and brothers in the United Church of Christ and all persons who are committed to the struggle for justice, love and inclusiveness, with the example and teachings of Jesus Christ as our guide."

We have also launched a "pony express" distribution of the movie "For the Bible Tells Me So", so members and friends who were not able to come to the viewing at the church can watch this important movie at home. Sometime over the summer months, you will be receiving this movie. The Committee asks that you try to watch it within a week of receiving it, cross your name off the list, and pass it along to another household on the list. If you are unable to pass the movie along, please call the Church Office (860-228-3077) and we will arrange to pick it up.

If you have any questions or would like to provide feedback on the draft Open & Affirming Statement, discuss the movie, or have any other comments, please speak with Mark Hand, Chairperson of O & A.
